The present photographic essay portrays expressions of Catholicism of the Xakriabá indigenous people, located in the municipality of São João das Missões (northern Minas Gerais). It presents images of prayers, cults and scenes from the Barreiro Preto village and of characters that are central in the perpetuation of the local Catholic tradition. The regimes of knowledge used to transmit the Word of God to the faithful are also addressed. In a brief text, interspersed with the captioned photos, the Xakriabá Catholicism is highlighted as a religiosity engendered by the faithful, frontiersmen and prayers, summarized in the sentence “The people here carry on”.
