This article results from the project “Another prison is possible? Freedom and confinement in prison self-management”, a research of scientific initiation developed between 2019- 2020 in the APAC (Association for Protection and Support to Convicts), in the city of São Luís. I develop some reflections on the practice of prison self-management common to the method of penal execution of the APAC. This paper draws on complaints made in the context of spontaneous conversations as part of the reflections woven by these rehabilitees. As their roles as pre-established (in the regiment) and established (in the unit), what Darke (2019) defines as unit self-management ends up being characterized rather as a kind of “participation” in the organizational structure of the unit.
