Abstract

This review aims to explain the main aspects of the ethnographic work produced by Beatriz Lins in two Women's Defense Police Stations (DDM) in São Paulo, between 2012 and 2013. Transformed into a book, this work was initially the author's master's thesis. Lins analyzed the operationalization of the Maria da Penha Law and daily police work, based on data produced through participant observation, conversations and interviews with police officers and women in situations of violence who resorted to police stations. The results of the research show that the legal-police assistance to women in this situation is crossed by perceptions of gender, morality and limitations of material and human resources.
