This essay carry out a discussion on the Bolsa Família Program (PBF), the Auxílio Emergencial (Emergency Aid) and the upcoming creation of the Auxílio Brasil. With the Covid-19 pandemic and the federal government's inefficiency in dealing with it, several public debates began to take place on the so-called Emergency Aid, created to provide income to millions of people during the health crisis. At the same time, a broad discussion began on the Bolsa Família Program with its possible replacement by Auxílio Brasil. Thus, based on data from an ethnographic fieldwork research in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, the essay seeks to raise questions that help us understand the inflections between these income transfer programs and governments that do not invest in social rights, as well as how this affects the lives of people in situations of material precariousness who suffer from food insecurity, growing poverty and the return of starvation.
Keywords: Bolsa Família – Emergency Aid – food insecurity – Covid-19 – slums
