The paper discusses the use of smartphones in ethnographic research, particularly WhatsApp. The research was based on a study carried out with 4 participants during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic when the main recommendation was social distancing and isolation. The context of the pandemic was the driver of changes, difficulties, and conflicts in the lives of our collaborators, narrated to us via cell phone. Considering WhatsApp's flexible, mobile, instant, and personalized uses (Cruz and Harindranath 2020), our argument is that we were within reach of our interlocutors to share everyday and exceptional situations. Understanding the use of electronic devices, internet access, and inequalities in digital technology access is a relevant issue for current ethnographic research. If there were a bibliography about digital studies, it grows especially after the pandemic, which has significantly affected forms of interaction and social dynamics.
